Elizabeth Heyrick was a local Quaker who campaigned forcefully for the abolition of slavery, at a time when people didn’t want to give up the slaves they had in their ‘possession’. She married John Heyrick who wrote the poem ‘On a Cave called Black Annis’s Bower‘ about our legendary Black Annis … but back to the song:
